Description

The lecturers as well as the participants came from varied scientific backgrOlUldsfor the NATO -Advanced Study Institute (ASDheld atAltinoluk, Edremit. Turkey during the period of July 31 -August 12 1989. The lecturers were University Professors from the USA, Canada, England, C'-.ermany, France and Spain and they covered a broad spectrwn of specialities from methodology t.o appications. On the other hand students coming from the various NATO countries arrived with an inhomogeneous background to absorb the broad spectnUIl of material covered by the lecturers. However, by the end of the two week period of the ASI, that initial difference in scientific background had been reduced substantially . The lecturers had covered subject matters from the most fundamental to the most applied aspects of theoretical and computational organic chemistry. The lectures were argnmented with tutorial sessions and computational laboratory led by a small group of carefnlly selected tutors. Overall, this NATO -ASI was a ~at success and the Editors are hopeful that the present volume will communicate the scientific success and will radiate the intellectual spirit of the meeting.

Grand Prix Pontiac's Luxury Performance Car

Description

With 18 years of research on the Pontiac Grand Prix, Don Keefe takes the reader on a voyage that covers nearly a half century, from the earliest design sketches of the late 1950s, bringing the concept to market, all production figures to date, to the exciting Grand Prixs of today. Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic

Description

In 49 B.C., the seven hundred fifth year since the founding of Rome, Julius Caesar crossed a small border river called the Rubicon and plunged Rome into cataclysmic civil war. From Cicero, Spartacus, and Brutus, to Cleopatra, Virgil, and Augustus, here are some of the most legendary figures in history brought thrillingly to life. The Gentle Discipline Book: How to Raise Co-Operative, Polite and Helpful Children

Description

Discipline is a vital part of child-rearing, but many parents misunderstand how to use it and attempt to control their child's behaviour via a combination of punishment and motivation. Yet while this traditional approach may appear to produce quick results, it can potentially damage the child and, in the long-term, leave parents with a far worse problem than they had initially. The Gentle Discipline Book analyses common 'discipline' techniques and explains why so many are ineffective. It focuses on helping parents understand why children misbehave and how to respond in a way that will help them work with - rather than against - their child. Gentle discipline focuses on teaching and learning, rather than punishing. With plenty of practical advice and case studies from real families, it will enable parents to set boundaries and enforce them with compassion and respect; demonstrates how parents can inspire children to be better and do better; and how to set a great example for them. Gentle parenting is not about being a pushover - it means understanding children and having realistic expectations of them, as well as responding appropriately and consistently. The book covers a range of ages and the principles it contains work with toddlers, 'tweens' and teenagers equally well - because it helps parents respond to the unique needs of each individual child. As well as providing a framework that will enable parents to become experts in their own child's behaviour, The Gentle Discipline Book provides solutions to common problems such as whining and sulking, aggressive behaviour, refusal to do things, rudeness, sibling rivalry, lying, low self-esteem and a lack of confidence.

Liz Goldwyn: Pretty Things: The Last Generation of American Burlesque Queens

Pretty Things: The Last Generation of American Burlesque Queens

Description

Liz Goldwyn's lifelong fascination with the inimitable glamour of classic burlesque inspired her to spend the past eight years corresponding with, visiting, interviewing, receiving striptease lessons from, and forming close relationships with the last generation of the great American burlesque queens. In "Pretty Things", Goldwyn invites us to step back into an era when the hourglass figure was in vogue and striptease was a true art form. Meet Betty 'Ball of Fire' Rowland, who was known for her flaming red hair and bump-and-grind routines (it turns out she once sued the author's grandfather, Samuel Goldwyn Jr., for using her stage name and costume in his Hollywood picture, Ball of Fire). Meet Sherry Britton, who, with her long black hair and curvy, trim physique, was among the most stunning of the burlesque stars before Mayor LaGuardia outlawed burlesque in New York. Meet Zorita, whose sexually explicit Consummation of the Wedding of the Snake dance (performed with a live snake) and other daring performances earned her legendary status. Goldwyn draws back the curtain to reveal the personal journeys of yesteryear's icons of female sexuality and power, restoring their legacy to an age that has all but forgotten them - despite today's resurgence of the art of burlesque. 'Lovingly documented' ("W Magazine") Goldwyn draws from hundreds of archival photographs, costume sketches, newspaper clippings, and mementoes that she has collected along the way. "Pretty Things" is at once a feast for the eyes and a tale of fleeting stardom and self-discovery.

It starts off as an ordinary class trip to the farm - boring, kind of dull. But before very long, chaos takes over as one zany incident leads to another, even zanier, one. Soon the entire farm is uproariously out of control. Enjoy insightful classic quotes, artfully crafted into beautiful images. Ryan McArthur's modern, minimalist illustrations presents the inspiring quotes of beloved writers and thinkers such as Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Johnson, and more in Artfully Spoken. Perfect for anyone looking for a lift these quotes are meant to encourage and make you think. The quotes in this special gift not only provide a great visual, but speak poignantly to life in general. Because of Miss Bridgerton

Description

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...This is not one of those times. Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband...someday. Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...Or not. There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either. But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

Second Treatise of Government

Description

The Second Treatise is one of the most important political treatises ever written and one of the most far-reaching in its influence. In his provocative 15-page introduction to this edition, the late eminent political theorist C. B. Macpherson examines Locke's arguments for limited, conditional government, private property, and right of revolution and suggests reasons for the appeal of these arguments in Locke's time and since.

Fairytales are one of our earliest and most vital cultural forms, and forests one of our most ancient landscapes. Both evoke a similar sensation in us - we find them beautiful and magical, but also spooky, sometimes horrifying. In this fascinating book, Maitland argues that the two forms are intimately connected: the mysterious secrets and silences, gifts and perils of the forests were both the background and the source of the fairytales made famous by the Grimms and Hans Christian Andersen. Yet both forests and fairy stories are at risk and their loss deprives us of our cultural lifeblood. Maitland visits forests through the seasons, from the exquisite green of a beechwood in spring, to the muffled stillness of a snowy pine wood in winter. She camps with her son Adam, whose beautiful photographs are included in the book; she takes a Concise Townscape free pdf barefoot walk through Epping Forest with Robert Macfarlane; she walks with a mushroom expert through an oak wood, and with a miner through the Forest of Dean. Maitland ends each chapter with a unique, imaginitive re-telling of a fairytale.

Richard Beeman,Distinguished Professor of Law Jay M Feinman: Supreme Court Decisions

Supreme Court Decisions

Description

A selection of the landmark Supreme Court decisions that have shaped American society Penguin presents a series of six portable, accessible, and above all essential reads from American political history, selected by leading scholars. Series editor Richard Beeman, author of "The Penguin Guide to the U.S. Constitution," draws together the great texts of American civic life, including the founding documents, pivotal historical speeches, and important Supreme Court decisions, to create a timely and informative mini-library of perennially vital issues. The Supreme Court is one of America's leading expositors of and participants in debates about American values. Legal expert Jay M. Feinman introduces and selects some of the most important "Supreme Court Decisions" of all time, which touch on the very foundations of American society. These cases cover a vast array of issues, from the powers of government and freedom of speech to freedom of religion and civil liberties. Feinman offers commentary on each case and excerpts from the opinions of the Justices that show the range of debate in the Supreme Court and its importance to civil society. Among the cases included will be "Marbury v. Madison," on the supremacy of the Constitution and the power of judicial review; "U.S. v. Nixon," on separation of powers; and "Hamdi v. Rumsfeld," a post-9/11 case on presidential power and due process."
